Mason Street Schoolhouse
The Mason Street Schoolhouse, located at 3966 Mason Street in San Diego, California, is a historic tourist attraction that dates back to 1865. It was the first publicly owned school in San Diego County and features a one-room, wood-frame structure with a shingle roof and a ten-foot high ceiling. The schoolhouse was equipped with a pot-bellied iron stove for heating and had minimal indoor plumbing with a water bucket and dipper. Originally located at Taylor and Whitman Streets, the school was moved in 1873 to make way for a two-story school building. However, the original schoolhouse was later returned and reconstructed on its original site. Today, the Schoolhouse is operated by the San Diego Historical Days Association and was officially given to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park in 2013. Visitors can step back in time and experience a glimpse of early education in San Diego at this historic institution.
