Originally known as Lakewood Park, the institution was renamed in honor of Col. Charles Heartwell in 1939. Col. Heartwell played a significant role in advocating for the city to purchase the land that now makes up the park. Located at 1900 Walnut Avenue, north of Pacific Coast Highway, Chittick Field spans 19 acres and offers state-of-the-art facilities for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike. The complex features a football field, an all-weather track, and three lighted soccer fields, all available for use by permitted groups. Originally developed in 1936 as a stormwater detention basin, Chittick Field has evolved into a premier recreational facility while maintaining its vital role in flood control management. Thanks to a transformative renovation completed in 2014, the site now boasts modern amenities including restrooms, bleacher areas, sports lighting, and paved parking, all set amidst beautifully landscaped grounds with native and drought-tolerant plants.
