Cape Mendocino Lighthouse (Original Location)
The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, originally located on a cliff at the westernmost point in California, is now situated at Mal Coombs Park in Shelter Cove. Built in 1868, the 43-foot tower was 422 feet above sea level and was automated in 1951. The light and Fresnel lens were moved to Ferndale, where they can be seen at the fairgrounds. After restoration by the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Preservation Society, the tower was opened to the public in May 2000. The original site now only has the tower's foundation and a plaque commemorating the lighthouse. Visitors can explore the grounds at Shelter Cove, which are open to the public, and experience a piece of maritime history on the remote "Lost Coast."
