Our city has a unique history, originally known as Advance and later renamed Cheap, after a beloved local minister. In 1938, the city was incorporated under its current name, inspired by the flat wooded landscapes that characterize the region.

Flatwoods is often described as a "bedroom community," with many residents commuting to work at nearby employers such as CSX Railroad, Marathon Oil, and Kings Daughters Medical Center.
