Reviews of Junaluska Memorial and Medicine Trail
"The drive up to the top was kind of scary. It's a one lane road. Say a prayer before you go that you won't met anyone."
"Junaluska was a Cherokee warrior, native to the mountains of western North Carolina. He gathered a group of Cherokee to fight the Red Stick Creek (also known as Muscogee), alongside General Andrew Jackson's Thirty-Ninth Battalion, at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, 1814. Fourteen years later, President Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which resulted in Junaluska and fellow Cherokee to be forced off their land to Oklahoma. On the Trail of Tears, Junaluska's wife and both sons died. This burial site and memorial, in Robbinsville, NC, explains that Junaluska, in anger, walked back to the original Cherokee Territory, now known as western North Carolina, from Oklahoma, Junaluska was, eventually, awarded near 800 acres of farm land, for serving as a U.S. soldier in the Creek War."
"Very nice short trail with lots to read about how plants are used as medicine. The burial place of a famous Indian and his wife, and everything about his life. My only disappointment was the down signs, fallen / broken rocks and disrepair. Oh and the couple making out in the backseat of their old blue car."
"In March of 2018, I embarked on a motorcycle trip, tracing the Trail of Tears from Cherokee NC to Talequah OK, stopping at poignant locations to pay respect along the way. This was one of my many stops. This is an amazing place to attempt a connection to those who came before us and understand their story. One cannot help but wonder how things might be different had Junaluska not been there to save the life of Andrew Jackson, who would then become President and spearhead the Indian Removal Act. Junaluska went to his grave, in this very place, with that regret."
"This is a must if you are in the area. Beautiful mountain loop trails that identify local plants and how the native people used them for medical purposes. Chief Junaluska is buried on the premises. It is sad and beautiful."
