Reviews of New Buffalo Pere Marquette RR Coal Tower
"I pulled up to it in my 1200 locomotive with high hopes, especially since the attendent's shed was right next to it. I waited and waited and waited. Nothing. I knocked on the shed to no avail. I walked over to the nearby roundhouse and received a lot of blank stares when I asked to "coal up". Finally, a nice person in the depot nearby explained that it was "out of service". And after a few awkward minutes, suggested I was "a bit too late". Well, I never. I left in a huff. I managed to find a few hunks of coal on the ground, which were helpful. But I had to walk all the way to the "nearby" beach to get enough sand. What a pain! There was a large source of fresh water nearby, but it took hours to haul all those hundreds of bucketfulls of water just to fill my tender! I'm afraid I really can't recommend this tower as any sort of place to coal up your steamer at all!! The Pere Marquette has done a very poor job of keeping this tower going. Don't be deceived by the cute Chessie cat on it."
