Despite being surrounded by homes and roads, Trail Creek Fen remains a pristine sanctuary, showcasing the distinctive raised graminoid fen and sedge-covered wetlands.
Owned and managed by Save the Dunes, Trail Creek Fen is a testament to dedicated conservation efforts. The preserve undergoes regular restoration and maintenance, including the removal of excess woody growth and prescribed burns to reintroduce the natural cycle of fire. Invasive species such as Dame's rocket, privet, and garlic mustard are actively managed to protect the native flora and fauna. The stewardship team is committed to restoring degraded areas and enhancing the upland habitat.
Home to over 200 plant species, including four that are endangered or threatened in Indiana, the fen is a botanist's paradise. Dominated by grasses like Indiana grass and fringed brome, visitors will also encounter vibrant plants such as swamp goldenrod and blazing star. The surrounding forest features tamarack and dwarf birch, with the intriguing carnivorous pitcher plant in abundance.
Trail Creek Fen is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Rare species like the yellow-spotted turtle and Baltimore checkerspot butterfly can be spotted, highlighting the ecological importance of this rare wetland community.
Please note that there are no established trails in this modest and wet preserve, so we recommend dressing appropriately for your visit. To reach Trail Creek Fen, travel east on U.S. 20 from the intersection with U.S. 421, then turn right onto Johnson Road. After approximately 0.4 mile, you'll find a gated drive on the left side of the road. Please park along the road without blocking the gate.
