"My husband and I were vacationing in the U.P. in Copper Harbor visiting mines. I asked my husband what mine his Great Uncle died in. Upon googling, I found it was the Painesdale Mine. On our way back home I put this location into our gps to stop by and walk around as we would not be in the area on Saturday when they have tours. While walking around the site, a volunteer pulled up for other reasons, but briefly opened the door to take a peek and talked a little about the history and their preservation efforts. We also found that a memorial plaque is going to be put outside the mine honoring the people that died there. Great history, great staff."
"A much intact hoist building with a upper tour,if you want to see a building in original then this is it,open Saturday noon till 4 until snow flies ,tour upstairs is $10,have souvenirs also"
"A good place to visit if you like exploring historical places the shaft was built in 1902, a piece of Keweenaw history. Currently the tours are open only on Saturdays. Check the website before going"
"We enjoyed an informative tour of the 1902 (yes, it's that old!) Champion #4 Shaft House at Painesdale Mine and Shaft. Tours are available from volunteers for the ground floor and for the upper level of the shaft house (check website before stopping by - currently Saturdays only - closed toe shoes required). The restoration work and grounds clearing that has been completed offers the ability to experience this valuable piece of Keweenaw history."
"Kurt, a volunteer, gave us a detailed and informal tour through three buildings... Highlighting uses, mechanisms, other visitors' anecdotes of finding evidence of their ancestors or themselves!!! We were allowed to look through some rubble and try to find copper, asking for advice and enjoying the hunt. There's a lot they've done to save it and a lot more still to do. There's a gift shop with free info and very affordable gifts, including copper from the area, polished rock samples, and t-shirts. There is not a lot of walking but it is very uneven with some steps, so not handicap accessible at this time."
