"While repairing the roof at my place of work 2 years ago in Chicago an employee of Knickerbocker Roofing & Paving Co dropped a ladder on the roof of my car. They seemed appropriately apologetic, paid for the repairs plus an amount they claimed would offset any taxes, but refused to cut the check directly to the repair shop and now I know why. The payment was made to me as if I were a contractor which is now costing me an additional $400 in taxes above their estimate. Also because they failed to send me a 1099 form for the check they cut me I am having to amend my taxes months later. Since they successfully stuck me with additional "income" I have to pay self employment taxes, and it even adjusted the tax credit I received for my marketplace healthcare so I owe at a state level as well. All for a job-site accident at the fault of one of their employees. I was not a customer of these folks, so I cannot speak to the level of workmanship they provide but I can say they are lacking in ethics and decency."
