About the Whitman Library
Welcome to the Whitman Library, a cherished hub of learning and community engagement located at 200 Snyder Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As part of the Free Library system, we proudly serve the vibrant neighborhoods of Whitman and Pennsport. Our library is conveniently situated between 2nd Street and S. Philip Street, close to popular shopping destinations like Snyder Plaza and Whitman Plaza, as well as major thoroughfares such as I-95 and Columbus Boulevard.
At Whitman Library, we offer a diverse range of programs and activities designed to enrich the lives of our patrons. Join our Senior Strength and Conditioning class to enhance your fitness, strength, and balance under the guidance of a certified instructor. For those looking to improve their English language skills, our casual conversation group welcomes intermediate and advanced speakers to practice and build confidence without the need for registration.
Every Thursday, unwind with our free yoga sessions, open to all levels, with instructors Janet Faulls and Anne-Marie Mulgrew. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or a beginner, you're welcome to bring your own mat or borrow one from us.
Our library also hosts the Friends of Whitman Library, a volunteer group dedicated to supporting our initiatives and fundraising efforts. Meetings are held monthly inside the library, and all are welcome to join and contribute to our community's growth.
The Whitman Library is steeped in local history, with roots tracing back to the early days of the Whitman neighborhood, named after the nearby Walt Whitman Bridge. Our area holds a rich cultural heritage, including the famous Philadelphia Mummers tradition, which began here in "the Neck."
Since opening our doors on January 24, 1977, and following a significant renovation in 2000, we have been committed to "Changing Lives" by offering updated facilities and Internet access. When you visit, don't miss the meeting room adorned with South Philadelphia scenes painted by renowned watercolorist Howard N. Watson.
Join us at Whitman Library, where community, culture, and learning come together in a welcoming environment. Please note that in observance of Labor Day, we will close early at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 30, and remain closed through Monday, September 2. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Reviews of Whitman Library
"Great library, very kid friendly. Has a play area and a million books for children."
"I am a Senior citizen (don't tell anybody). I love to read but as the years go by and the eyesight goes it has been harder to read. Guess what not any more. They have large print books. Check them out. I love ir."
"Whitman library is great, a serious library, yes, but they have lots of things for the kids to do there and lots of good information for the general public too, (I just wish that I wasn't banned for life from having a library card for trusting my grandsons....... aunt...... [I'll leave out the adjectives for her irresponsible, immature self... oh, sorry,] when she said 'I'll take his things back' - and then they vanished into the ether- I have other, younger grandchildren now.) Oh well- the library is nice!"
"I usually love this place, the staff are excellent, friendly and very helpful. My complaint is that the website is NEVER up to date regarding hours or closures or right now--drop off. Why not put on the website that you can ONLY return books through the drop off during certain hours 2 days a week. Why does someone have to go to the library to find this out, especially during a pandemic!? Not everyone lives in the immediate area of the library and can randomly walk around to see a typed sign on the fence or the door is the DROP BOX!!"
