"Library Hall is a1954 reconstruction of the first public library in the United States. On this site in 1789, Ben Franklin's Library Company opened. It was the first U.S. institution to allow the public to borrow books to read onsite or offsite. The building now houses historic texts from the American Philosophical Society. Its collection includes a copy of the Declaration of Independence in Jefferson's handwriting! The building is free to visit on weekdays, and there's a small exhibit space in the lobby."
"Another beautiful building in this city so rich with our country's history. I definitely recommend paying the extra money and taking the time to tour through as many as you can."
"This is the first library in the United States, founded by none other than Benjamin Franklin. Dating back to 1790, Library Hall made reading more accessible to the people (thank you, Library Company of Philadelphia.) The original Library Hall was torn down, but this reconstitution stands just across the street from the American Philosophical Society & currently serves as their organization's home to some really neat texts. I didn't get to go in, sadly, due to renovations. The American Philosophical Society's website has some virtual offerings for folks to explore in the meantime."
