"The Clement Oak is believed to be close to 400+ years of age. The tree has weathered many events in local history, including being the landing site of the first hot air balloon flight in 1793. The great White Oak was to be felled when the nearby Walmart was built, but was ultimately saved. Most of the upper limbs of the oak came down in a storm in 2020, leaving what remains of the tree in relatively bad shape. As of the late 2021, a small portion of the tree still lives, and its leaves were once again changing colors with the seasons."
"Beautiful tree, however, I'd hate to inform the county or future visitors but the tree unfortunately perished during our last storm. The base to this tree is split from a lightning strike and unfortunately caught fire to this 4 century old landmark. Still giving the site the rating it deserves. What a magnificent tree it was."
"I'm not sure how you give a tree a 4-star rating.. Just saying. It's a cool tree. Lol"
"Fascinating place although kind of ruined by Walmart putting up a fence so close to the location. Funny how corporate greed has the ability to make historical sites hard to get to or almost hide them enough that it hardly gets noticed. Most people do not notice this. If you drive around to the back of the Walmart in Woodbury/deprford off of cooper street. The side where they have the mostly empty garden center. About halfway down over the chain link fence you will notice a huge 300 year old oak tree with a plaque. This is the tree. It used to be a gathering place for the lenape Indians over 300 years ago. Imagine at that time there was no corporate structures. Not even many houses if you will. Just a vast run of farms and trees far as the eye could see. It must have been very beautiful back then. Now it sits idle along the chain link fence. I think the least walmart could do is put up a sign for visitors to see that there is a historical tree back there. Many kids could learn something instead of running to the toy aisle and screaming mommy daddy I want this."
