"Thank you for your excellent review, CDK007. Before I read your explanation, I thought, "wow, it's a twin sister to the Hibernia Mine Bridge, with her Phoenix columns and distinctive curved top chord reinforcements." But now I know that it is the same bridge. Fascinating. So the base supports are still there. The woodline is quite thick now, and I wasn't dressed to go ripping through the brush today, so I didn't see anything of her remains, but maybe in the winter."

"It’s always curious when two roads with the same name line up but don’t connect. As one might have guessed both Mill Lanes were once one. I cannot determine which came first, the railroads or the road. Likely Mill Lane predates the South Branch Railroad and Easton and Amboy Railroads (now Lehigh Valley) cutting across it. By the late 1800s the Central Railroad of NJ wanted to eliminated railroad grade crossings, where the train and vehicles can crash, so they relocated the Hibernia Mine Railroad Bridge to Mill Lane and repurposed it as a one lane vehicle bridge. This section of Mill Lane was abandoned some time in the mid 1900s but the bridge remained until it was removed in 1997. Since the bridge was of such historical significance, constructed in 1879 using Phoenix Columns, it got moved again and is now a pedestrian bridge connecting Raritan NJ to Duke Island Park. So there’s no longer a bridge connecting the Mill Lanes but you can still visit that bridge nearby. The stone abutments should still be present. Something to explore in winter."
