About Us

Welcome to the Abbeville County Museum, a treasured landmark nestled at 309 Poplar Street in Abbeville, South Carolina. Housed in the historic 1854 building that once served as the Abbeville Jail, our museum offers a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of Abbeville County's history.
Operated by the dedicated Abbeville County Historical Society, the museum invites you to explore an extensive collection of unique artifacts and documents that illuminate the vibrant past of our beloved county. A highlight of our offerings is the personal narrative tour of the McGowan Trails. This immersive experience provides a detailed exploration of the McGowan-Barksdale-Bundy House, showcasing its intricate architectural features across three main levels, three servant cabins, and the enchanting Heritage Gardens. The tour also delves into the lives of Confederate General Samuel McGowan and WWII General William E. Barksdale, who once called this historic house their home.
The McGowan Trails Tour extends beyond the house to include significant landmarks such as General McGowan’s first home on Magazine Street, the Law Range near Abbeville Square, Trinity Episcopal Church, and his final resting place in Long Cane Cemetery on SC Highway 20.
Additionally, visitors can marvel at Caboose No. 5759, which made its final journey from the Abbeville Depot to the museum grounds on December 3, 2013, and is now proudly displayed at the McGowan, Barksdale, Bundy House.
