About Us

Welcome to the Cairo Public Library, a cherished community resource located in the historic A.B. Safford Memorial Building at 1609 Washington Avenue, Cairo, Illinois. This iconic structure, gifted to the citizens of Cairo by Mrs. Anna Eliza Safford in 1884, stands as a testament to her love, devotion, and civic foresight in memory of her husband, A.B. Safford.
Our library is more than just a place for books; it is a hub of history and culture. We invite you to explore our vast collection of literature and periodicals that enrich the lives of Cairo residents and visitors alike. Under the dedicated leadership of Monica Smith, our director with over 25 years of service, the Cairo Public Library continues to be a beacon of knowledge and community spirit.
While visiting, don’t miss the chance to explore nearby attractions that celebrate Cairo’s rich heritage. The Hewer, a striking bronze sculpture by George Grey Bernard, commemorates the heroism of Capt. William Parker Halliday and stands as a symbol of resilience against natural disasters. Additionally, the Old Custom House, a rare Italianate-style federal building, now serves as a history museum offering insights into the region’s storied past. It is open Tuesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Experience the unique confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, a natural wonder that underscores Cairo's historical significance as a bustling port city. This geographical marvel continues to highlight Cairo's role as a vital transport hub.
Join us each September for the Heritage Blues & Gospel Festival, a vibrant celebration of music featuring talented Blues musicians and church choirs from the Tri-State Area.
At Cairo Public Library, we believe that nobody can share the history of Cairo better than the locals. We are proud to be part of this community and look forward to welcoming you to our library, where history and culture come alive.

"It was my first time going to the library, it was beautiful inside and out, but the lady at the front desk her attitude wasn't beautiful as the building. Very disappointed. Not pleased and won't be back.."
"Incredibly beautiful old library building. Superb old architecture on well kept grounds. Huge collection of older books. Plenty well back into 1800s. If you like old books this is the place to go."
"Great historical building and library. You can get a sense of the history of this town and region by visiting. The librarian was very welcoming and helpful. Lots of valuable, old books and artifacts. Meeting rooms upstairs seemed to be locked in another era. Great place to visit"
