About the Business
Welcome to 1904 Flight Cage, a historic gem nestled within the Edward K. Love Conservation Foundation Cypress Swamp at 1 Government Drive, St. Louis, Missouri. Step into a world of mystery and wonder as you explore this enchanting habitat, where a floating bridge and viewing pier guide you through lush hardwoods, vibrant shrubs, and serene aquatic plants. This captivating environment is a year-round sanctuary for cold-hardy birds, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of cypress swamps.
Originally commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution for the 1904 World's Fair, the Flight Cage was intended for relocation to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. However, the passionate citizens of St. Louis rallied to preserve this architectural marvel, leading to its purchase by the city. This decision laid the foundation for the creation of the St. Louis Zoo, the world’s first municipally supported zoo.
Over the years, the Flight Cage has undergone several transformative renovations, with the most recent in 2004, commemorating its centennial. Today, it stands as a stunning showcase of North American bird species like the roseate spoonbill, yellow-crowned night heron, snowy egret, and double-crested cormorant, all thriving in a recreated cypress swamp environment reflective of the Mississippi River’s natural wetlands.
Located in the heart of Historic Hill, the 1904 Flight Cage is part of a charming journey through one of the oldest areas of the Saint Louis Zoo. From its storied past at the 1904 World's Fair to the Spanish architectural elegance of the nearby Bird House, Primate House, and Herpetarium, this area blends nostalgic history with modern exhibits, offering visitors a unique and memorable experience.
Visit us at 1904 Flight Cage and immerse yourself in the beauty and ecology of this extraordinary ecosystem, a testament to the enduring spirit of St. Louis and its commitment to conservation and education.

Reviews
"My favorite part of the Zoo is the 1904 Brid Cage. It was originally part of the 1904 worlds fair and is still in use today. You can walk through the cage and see birds close up. Currently it's a swamp exhibit with ducks and other water fowl. Very cool 10/10 would recommend"
