If you cannot afford an attorney or to pay fines, you can request a court-appointed attorney or a judge's decision on your financial ability.
Courtroom Etiquette:
Proper attire is required in the courtroom; sleeveless shirts, shorts, and hats are not permitted. Electronic devices, weapons, and food/drinks are prohibited. As the Judge enters the courtroom, please rise and remain seated until your case is called.
Plea Options:
- Guilty: Admitting to the offense, understanding the law prohibits the act, and having no defense. A fine may be assessed.
- Not Guilty: Denying guilt, requiring the city to prove charges beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. You can choose to represent yourself or hire an attorney.
Trial and Verdict:
During a trial, the City presents its case first, and you have the right to cross-examine witnesses. You may also present your case and call witnesses. The Judge will reach a verdict based on the most reasonable testimony and evidence. If found guilty, you have the right to appeal within 10 days of the ruling.
