"Dunning Tuckpointing & Concrete wanted to charge $50 just to come and LOOK at a potential job. I'd be hesitant to pay for a bid for an A/C tech or electrician - trades that might require hooking up equipment (or any actual work) to gather the info needed to get me a bid. But I don't trust a company that wants to charge me $50 to drive 2 miles and use their eyeballs (which is all that's needed to estimate a tuckpointing job). Also, if I'd be paying a contractor anything to come out and take a look, then shouldn't there be a contract telling me what I'm getting for that $50? Does that entitle me to an estimate? What's stopping them from pocketing $50, glancing at the wall, shaking their head, then driving off to shake down the next sap for another $50? Maybe they're the best ever - but if that's their business model, which isn't like anyone else's I've run across, I guess we'll never know."
