The cemetery spans over 2.75 acres and is steeped in rich history, dating back to the mid-19th century when it was originally part of Oakland Cemetery.
Keokuk National Cemetery is part of a proud tradition of national cemeteries established to inter the remains of Union soldiers from the Civil War. The site was donated to the U.S. government by the city of Keokuk, and it became an essential burial ground for soldiers who perished in nearby Army hospitals during the war. Today, it continues to serve as a place of remembrance and respect for those who served in the armed forces.
Our cemetery offers space for both casketed and cremated remains, ensuring that veterans and their loved ones have a peaceful place of rest. Burial eligibility extends to all members of the armed forces who meet certain service requirements, as well as their spouses, minor children, and, under specific conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities.
The cemetery is equipped with a Visitor Learning Module (VLM), a digital platform that allows visitors to engage with the personal histories of nearly 10 million veterans. Through VLM, you can post tributes, share stories of service, and upload photographs and documents to commemorate the lives and achievements of those interred here.
For those planning a visit, the cemetery's office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except on federal holidays, with the exception of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. We kindly ask visitors to respect our policies regarding floral arrangements and decorations to maintain the cemetery's dignity and appearance.

"Not sure how I feel giving a cemetery a five-star review just because of the nature of the thing itself. What I am giving five stars to is the still beauty this place exudes. I made a quick cut through because I was working in the area and I was headed from point a to point b. I don't know if it was just the time of day but it took my breath away. What a peaceful place to lay a loved one who has passed on. It almost seems like a Greek ruin or something. I couldn't believe that elevation change here it's like in a area with really steep hills and the trees are mature I don't know anything about the history of the place but driving by the veterans section, oh my thoughts kind of stood still in time and we're replaced by a kind of reverie. I hope you all enjoy the pictures because there's a real reason I'm writing this along with my hope that somebody else will find the same sense of peace there that I did. I really needed it at that time too. Bottom line: I think this place is imbued with magic or something I can't describe it. I really wish it was closer to Southwest Missouri where I live. I would go light paint there and keep everybody company at night. Thanks for reading this"
"My dad was in active duty in the United States Navy in World War II, so after my dad (George Louis Marzeck, Sr.) died September 17, 2006, my mom (June Alice [Gass] Marzeck) died April 19, 2010 and my sister (Luanne [Marzeck] Lennie) died October 17, 2014, I had both of my parents' ashes buried in the newer eastern section of Keokuk National Cemetery in December 2014. I last visited there on June 6, 2022."
