About the Business
Welcome to Dungeness Beach, the Farthest West Point on the East Coast, located at Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys, Georgia. As a cherished park and tourist attraction, Dungeness Beach offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Just 1.5 miles from the Dungeness ferry dock, it's the second closest beach for visitors eager to explore the pristine shores of Cumberland Island.
The journey to Dungeness Beach is an adventure in itself. Begin by following the scenic route from the ferry dock along Coleman Avenue to Grand Avenue. Along the way, you'll encounter the fascinating ruins of the Dungeness Mansion, a must-see for history enthusiasts. For a more direct path to the beach, follow the road past historic Carnegie-era buildings, including The Grange and the old dairy barn.
For a smoother trek, take advantage of the two boardwalks that meander through the salt marsh and a maritime forest, offering respite from the sun and a chance to observe local wildlife. Once you reach the sandy dunes, a short walk leads you to the expansive Dungeness Beach, where the wide, sandy shores provide a serene escape from mainland crowds.
Explore the beach at your leisure, but remember to stay on marked paths to protect the delicate dune ecosystem. For a longer adventure, consider a beach walk up to Sea Camp Beach, creating a memorable loop through the island's natural and historical landscapes.

"Cumberland Island is a beautiful place you can get to from St. Mary GA. The ferry has a set schedule, and the travel is worth it. The trails are amazing and the beach is beautiful. There is also overnight camping and bike trails too."
"Great beach to enjoy while exploring the island! I suggest taking the boardwalk to the beach rather than doing the dunes as it does get really humid and extremely hot that many people compare it to walking through a desert! I highly recommend visiting the beach as there are a lot of shells and the water is pretty good! It will feel secluded if you walk far enough from the trails as you will definitely have a great time enjoying the coastal area!"
"A beautiful wide beach on the Georgia coast that is largely unspoiled by man. You can only get to it through a long walk from Dungeness."
"Hell of a hike to get out here from the Dungeness ferry dock, but it’s so worth it. We had the beach to ourselves! If you can stand the walk and the heat, take the so called “desert” route from the ruins of the Dungeness Mansion. The wide open beach is definitely worth the trip. Make sure you can bear the sun though, because after noon this path becomes nearly unbearably hot! I suggest wearing good covering clothes until you get there. Otherwise, there is a longer route from Sea Camp ferry dock, with more shade as far as I heard. We didn’t take that route. The sand is clean and soft, and the water was warm and had gentle waves throughout our visit. One of the nicest beaches I’ve stopped at! There are no trash cans as it is located on national park land, so you have to pack your trash and take it back with you. Please keep it clean!"
"It’s nice that there’s a boardwalk to this beach, unlike some of the other ones on the island. I wouldn’t swim in the water but walking on the beach is nice. This is part of the suggested hiking route for day visitors on the island. Lots and lots of sea birds and dead jellyfish on the beach. If you’re lucky you might see horses on the beach too."
