About the Business
Welcome to Nemasket Hill Cemetery, a historic and serene resting place located at 515 Plymouth Street in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Established in 1662 by 26 settlers who acquired the land from the local Native American tribes, Nemasket Hill Cemetery is the oldest and largest burial ground in Middleborough, spanning 33 peaceful acres.
The cemetery is home to the town's oldest engraved headstone, belonging to Elizabeth Vaughan, who passed away on June 24, 1693. For over three centuries, Nemasket Hill Cemetery has been a place of remembrance and reflection, continuously serving the community since its incorporation on March 24, 1885.
Our cemetery is rich in history and community involvement. In the early 1900s, the Nemasket Cemetery Sewing Circle played a pivotal role in funding various improvement projects, including the construction of a mortuary/chapel in 1911. Although the historic bridge that once connected North Street to the cemetery is no longer present, the original wooden stairs remain as a testament to the past.
We invite the public to join us at our Annual Meetings, held on the last Saturday in April at the Middleborough Public Library. These gatherings are an opportunity to engage with the community and discuss the ongoing preservation and enhancement of our cherished cemetery.
In recent years, the historic arch and gates at the cemetery entrance were beautifully restored with a CPA grant, thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of Cassidy Brothers of Rowley. Despite sustaining significant damage in an accident on October 5th, they have been meticulously repaired and returned to their former glory.
As a 501(c)(13) organization, Nemasket Hill Cemetery welcomes gifts, donations, and special bequests to support the maintenance, beautification, and general care of our grounds. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made payable to "Nemasket Hill Cemetery Association" and sent to P.O. Box 31, Middleboro, MA 02346. Donations can also be directed to Rockland Trust Bank at 30 South Main Street, Middleboro, MA 02346.
We are dedicated to preserving the history and tranquility of Nemasket Hill Cemetery for generations to come. If you have any questions or wish to contribute, please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you for your support and interest in our historic cemetery.

Reviews
"Awesome place to explore. Many old, still readable and significant headstones here. Def. worth your time"
"Great views... historical background. Well taken care of."
"We found many of our family buried here, some as far back as the early 1700's. We had the good fortune to meet a volunteer who maintained the section of the cemetery where our family was buried, and being a local for her whole life, was able to fill in some details and read some inscriptions. This is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in early American history."
