Located at 1 York Street, Newport, Rhode Island, the Newport Health Equity Zone (HEZ) is more than just a store; it’s a vibrant community initiative dedicated to fostering healthy people and places. Since 2015, we have been committed to transforming Newport into a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, focusing on the root causes of health disparities in the North End and Broadway neighborhoods.

Our Mission

At the Newport Health Equity Zone, we believe in the power of community design, where residents are at the forefront of creating a healthier environment. We ensure equal voice for all participants, encourage innovation beyond the comfort zone, and celebrate every milestone, big or small. Our sustainability is rooted in shared power, making collective impact achievable and enduring.

Our Achievements

- Developed an active transportation advocacy plan and introduced the resident-written Green & Complete Streets Ordinance.

- Increased city-wide visibility of equity, influencing Newport’s Open Space and Comprehensive Plans.

- Achieved representation of residents on key local boards and commissions.

- Provided racial equity training to over 150 individuals and trained 8 Certified Community Health Workers.

- Established the North Side Community Farmers Market and funded 20 resident-led physical activity programs.

- Leveraged over 1.5 million dollars to support our HEZ Action Plan.

Our Philosophy

We are a resident-driven collaborative that addresses health disparities by empowering local voices and focusing on systemic, changeable economic and social conditions. As the Rhode Island Department of Health defines it, health equity means everyone having equal access to resources for a long, healthy life.
