Dr. James Tollman, an esteemed physician with over 17 years of experience in acute care, is dedicated to providing top-tier medical services to our patients.

As the Founder, President, and CEO of Essex Inpatient Physicians (EIP), Dr. Tollman has been an integral part of the healthcare landscape since 2007. EIP was established with the mission to deliver quality inpatient hospitalist care across North Shore, Massachusetts. Our expertise extends beyond traditional acute care, offering specialized services in Long Term Acute Care, Acute Rehab, Inpatient Psychiatry, and Acute Substance Detox hospitals. Since 2012, our focus has expanded to include comprehensive post-acute care, currently providing medical coverage at 17 local Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) across MA North Shore, Boston Metro North, southern New Hampshire, and coastal Maine.

Dr. Tollman’s journey in medicine began with a BA in biology from Carleton College, followed by a medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Tufts University and has served both as a primary care physician and a pioneering hospitalist. His leadership skills were honed during his service as an Infantry officer in the US Army and as a physician in the MA Army National Guard.

Our administrative and clinical operations are spearheaded by a dedicated team of professionals. Sonia Mitchell, our Director of Administrative Operations, brings a wealth of experience in financial analysis and business operations. Trish, who joined us in 2021, oversees clinical operations, ensuring seamless collaboration among our healthcare providers to deliver the best patient care.
