About the Jamestown Historical Society Museum
Welcome to the Jamestown Historical Society Museum
Located at 92 Narragansett Avenue in the heart of Jamestown, Rhode Island, the Jamestown Historical Society Museum is your gateway to exploring the rich history of Jamestown and its surrounding islands. As a cherished museum and tourist attraction, we are dedicated to preserving the narrative of this unique coastal community through engaging exhibitions, meticulously maintained historic structures, and a variety of educational programs and events.
Discover Jamestown's Strategic Significance
Situated on Conanicut Island, Jamestown has played a pivotal role in the coastal defenses of Narragansett Bay. Our exhibits delve into the military history of the area, including Fort Dumpling from the late 19th century, and the World War-era Forts Greble, Getty, and Wetherill. These installations underscore Jamestown's strategic importance over the years.
Explore Our Extensive Collections
Our museum boasts a fascinating collection of Jamestown postcards, spanning from 1900 to the present day, offering invaluable insights into the transformation of our neighborhoods and town. Additionally, we preserve home movies that capture poignant family events and special occasions, providing a cinematic glimpse into the past.
A Journey Through Time: Ferryboats and Bridges
Transportation to and from Conanicut Island has evolved significantly. Discover the history of Jamestown's ferryboats, which were operational for over 300 years, and learn about the bridges that revolutionized connectivity: the West Passage bridge in 1940 and the Newport-Pell bridge in 1969.
Historic Sites on the National Register
Jamestown is home to several sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the iconic Jamestown Windmill and the Beavertail Light. These landmarks are integral to understanding our island's historical significance and are preserved for future generations to appreciate.
Plan Your Visit
The Jamestown Historical Society Museum is housed in a building with its own rich history, originally constructed in 1885 as a one-room primary school. Today, it serves as a repository of Jamestown's past, offering visitors a chance to explore artifacts and documents that tell the island's story.

Reviews of Jamestown Historical Society Museum
"Hmm, said it was open on all places we checked and they were definitely closed, on Sunday Oct. 29th!"
"One room full of interesting historical information!"
"A great spot for a quick and fascinating historical look into past life in rural New England. Very interesting structure and machinery. Gives you a great appreciation of how hard life was during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries across most of New England. Great views across Conanicut Island from the inside of the mill looking out and from the surrounding fields. Largely self-guided tours, although volunteers can provide more details. Great for people of all ages."
"Beautiful area! The building is historical and small, but full of interesting photos and information. If you like history and relaxing vacations, this is a good place to visit"
"Learning about where you are is always a great idea and this charming historical society is absorbing, friendly, and a great way to spend an hour or so browsing the finer details of American history that few explore."
