Welcome to Misery Islands: A Hidden Gem of Salem, Massachusetts
Located off the coast of Salem, Massachusetts, the Misery Islands offer a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and adventure. Comprising the 83-acre Great Misery Island and the 4-acre Little Misery Island, this captivating park and tourist attraction is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
A Journey Through Time
The islands boast a rich history dating back to the Mosconomet Indians and the early 1620s, when Captain Robert Moulton famously endured "three miserable days" here, giving the islands their evocative name. Explore the remnants of an early 20th-century resort, once a luxurious retreat for Boston's elite, featuring a clubhouse, saltwater swimming pool, and a nine-hole golf course. Although a devastating fire in 1926 led to the decline of this resort, the islands continue to attract visitors with their storied past and scenic vistas.
Nature's Playground
Venture out by boat and embark on a hiking adventure across two and a half miles of trails that wind through upland forests, small meadows, and along rugged, rocky shorelines. Enjoy spectacular overlooks and discover the diverse habitats that make Misery Islands a haven for wildlife and plant enthusiasts. At low tide, wade across the shallow channel to Little Misery Island and find the remains of the steamship, The City of Rockland, a piece of maritime history.
Plan Your Visit
Situated between the harbors of Marblehead and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Misery Islands are accessible by dinghy, canoe, or kayak. Please note that The Trustees do not offer boat excursions to the islands, and public boat launching is not permitted at nearby West Beach.

"Beautifully maintained island by the trustees. Bathrooms, trails, nice beach area, public moorings. Neat ruins to explore as well. Trees lovely for climbing. Nice shade."

"Nice place for hiking. Full of trails with beautiful view. If you have a boat to get to the Island you should definitely try this amazing scenario!"
"Little Misery is the better of the two islands. It has everything you'd want in a small island: a shipwreck, a beach with sea glass, a trail leading to a great overlook, and for the adventurous paddler, some really fun rock gardening along the east and southern sides."
