About the Pingree Woodland Trail
Welcome to Pingree Woodland Trail, a breathtaking park nestled in the scenic landscapes of Essex, Massachusetts. Located on Cutler Road, this enchanting natural haven offers a serene escape into the heart of New England’s pristine wilderness. Explore our stunning forested uplands and expansive freshwater wetlands, featuring trails that wind along ancient glacial eskers and wide cart paths, some of which connect to the renowned Harvard Forest and other nearby lands.
Our extensive trail network, crisscrossing through mixed hardwoods and majestic pines, invites adventurers of all kinds. Whether you're hiking, trail running, or skiing, the wide paths—lined with horse jumps—provide an exhilarating experience. A segment of the trail is part of the Bay Circuit Trail, a remarkable 230-mile journey through Eastern Massachusetts.
Discover the rich history embedded in Pingree Woodland. This land was once inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Eastern Woodland Indians, who trapped beavers and muskrats in Black Brook and other tributaries of the Ipswich River. Today, Black Brook flows gracefully along the edge of our property, where innovative "beaver deceivers" maintain the balance between wildlife activity and flood prevention.
The land holds a legacy dating back to 1927 when Sumner Pingree and Mary Weld established one of the area’s “great estates.” In collaboration with the Town of Hamilton, they preserved this beautiful estate, setting aside portions for the Pingree School and protecting Pingree Woodland for public enjoyment forever.
Explore 3.7 miles of moderate terrain with connecting trails, surrounded by mature white pines, beech, and oak trees, and a vibrant red maple swamp. Wildlife thrives here, thanks to the return of beavers, whose natural damming instincts are managed by culvert exclusion fences to maintain trail accessibility.
Getting here is easy. From Route 128/Exit 45/Route 1A North, head north on Route 1A for 4.5 miles, then turn left onto Cutler Road. The trailhead and parking are 1.0 mile ahead on the left. Alternatively, from the intersection of Route 133 and Route 1A in Ipswich, head south on Route 133/1A toward Hamilton, bear right to continue on Route 1A south, and after 3.4 miles, turn right onto Cutler Road.
We extend our gratitude to the talented photographers whose work brings our website to life: Jerry Monkman, Dorothy Monnelly, Adrian Scholes, David Alden St. Pierre, and Neil Ungerleider.
Come and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and rich history of Pingree Woodland Trail. We look forward to welcoming you!
