Explore the Enigma of Nix's Mate: A Hidden Gem in Boston Harbor

Discover the captivating history and allure of Nix's Mate, a unique tourist attraction nestled in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. Located approximately 5 nautical miles from downtown Boston, this small yet significant island has a rich past that continues to intrigue visitors and maritime enthusiasts alike.

Nix's Mate, also known as Nixes Island or Nick's Mate, is renowned for its striking black and white daybeacon. This octagonal pyramid, perched on a sturdy granite base, serves as a vital navigation aid, guiding ships safely through Boston Harbor's treacherous shoals. Erected by the Boston Marine Society in 1805, the beacon stands as a testament to maritime history, having undergone several restorations, most recently in 2003, to preserve its historical integrity.

Although the island is not open to the public, its storied past makes it a fascinating subject. Once a 12-acre expanse used for sheep grazing by harbor pilot John Gallop in the 17th century, Nix's Mate gradually diminished in size due to quarrying activities. It gained notoriety in 1726 when pirate Captain William Fly was executed and gibbetted on the island as a grim warning against piracy.

Recognizing the island's navigational hazards, the Boston Marine Society spearheaded efforts to construct a protective beacon in the early 19th century. Despite setbacks, including a lightning strike in 1841, the beacon has endured, earning a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Nix's Mate continues to capture the imagination, its enigmatic presence a reminder of Boston Harbor's maritime legacy. Whether you're a history buff or a curious traveler, learning about Nix's Mate offers a unique glimpse into the past and an appreciation for the enduring spirit of navigation and exploration.

"The best and the worst black and white traffic cone I've ever seen in the water. Can confirm other reviews that there are no tables and the service is horrible. Waited 4 hours for service from the establishment. Left in disappointment and frustration. However the view was amazing so 4 stars"

"It’s literally a black and white cone on a small pile of rocks. Must see."

"I was told they had great appetizers, but getting a table is pretty much impossible. And don't expect prompt service from the wait staff--I seated myself and ended up being rescued by the coast guard and treated for dehydration/exposure before anyone even came by with breadsticks. Nice view of the harbor. Also, haunted."
