Nestled in the heart of Weymouth, Massachusetts, Bamboo Grove of Great Pond Nature Preserve offers a serene escape at 60 Oakden Avenue. This beautiful park is home to the Great Pond Trail, a peaceful one-mile journey through lush woods and along the tranquil shores of Great Pond, boasting stunning water views.
Explore the Trail
The Great Pond Trail is a haven for nature enthusiasts, providing a seamless connection between Gifford Playground and Negus Park. As you wander along the trail, you'll encounter impressive glacial erratic boulders and breathtaking vistas of the pond. The trail is well-marked with yellow blazes and caters to various preferences, offering paths that hug the pond or meander through the woods adjacent to residential areas. It's a journey that promises both tranquility and adventure, with options to create a loop for your return.
Preserving Our Environment
To protect Weymouth’s vital public water supply, activities such as fishing, boating, swimming, and dog walking are prohibited. The Great Pond is part of the Weymouth Back River watershed, contributing to the town's drinking water and flowing towards Whitman’s Pond and the Weymouth Back River.
A Place of Rich History
This land holds significant historical value, being part of the Massachuseuk Native American tribe's region. A remarkable circa-1500 B.C.E. dugout canoe, discovered on the pond's shoreline in 1965, is now on display at the nearby Tufts Library. Recent archaeological finds during the construction of the Tri-Town Water Treatment plant further underscore the area's rich indigenous heritage. We encourage visitors to connect with local Native American tribes, such as the Mattakeeset band of the Massachusett and the Massachusett tribe at Ponkapoag, to learn more about their history and culture.
Flora and Fauna
The diverse ecosystem here is primarily composed of beech and pine, interspersed with oak, maple, hemlock, yellow birch, and holly, offering a vibrant backdrop to your exploration.
