About Us

Welcome to Hall Cemetery, a serene and historically significant resting place nestled in the picturesque landscape of West Quincy, Massachusetts. Located at 85 Crescent Street, this unique cemetery is not only a place of peace and reflection but also a testament to the rich history of the area.
Hall Cemetery holds a special place in Quincy’s heritage, primarily due to its association with Solomon Willard, a pivotal figure known as “the Father of the Granite Industry.” Willard, renowned for his architectural contributions such as the Bunker Hill Monument and Quincy City Hall, designed and laid out this cemetery, infusing it with his visionary touch.
The creation of Hall Cemetery was made possible through the generous donation of land and funds by James Hall, a wealthy bachelor from Adams Street. His philanthropy provided the community with a beautifully crafted space where history and nature converge.
One of the cemetery's most remarkable features is an enormous thirty-ton column, quarried at the famous Wigwam Quarry. This column, initially rejected for use in the New York Exchange, was ingeniously repurposed by Willard. Before setting it upright, he placed a complete set of stonecutter’s tools at the top of the shaft, adding a unique historical artifact to this already significant site.
Visitors to Hall Cemetery can appreciate not only its tranquil beauty but also its deep connections to the region's granite industry and architectural legacy. Whether you are exploring Quincy’s history or seeking a peaceful retreat, Hall Cemetery offers a unique glimpse into the past, surrounded by the natural beauty of Massachusetts.
