Our core services are essential to the quality of life in Boston's neighborhoods. We oversee the construction, maintenance, and cleaning of approximately 802 miles of roadways throughout the city. We also manage two major drawbridges, maintain over 68,000 city-owned street lights, and supervise contracts for the removal and disposal of approximately 260,000 tons of solid waste annually. Additionally, we operate Boston’s recycling program, diverting about 44,000 tons of waste each year.
In response to the challenges posed by sea level rise and storm surge, we are actively working to address flooding and protect the public right-of-way. For businesses and contractors, it is essential to review the mandatory Rules and Specifications for obtaining a permit to open or occupy a public way. Please note that the banner season runs from March 15 through December 15, and commercial waste companies are required to have a permit.
Our Street Lighting Division is dedicated to fixing and maintaining streetlights, while our Construction Inspection Unit (CIU) provides daily reports on all active construction work in the public way, including utility and private contractor projects, as well as city resurfacing and reconstruction projects.
