About Us

Welcome to Boston Public Works, your trusted local government office dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our vibrant city. Located at 400 Frontage Road, Boston, Massachusetts 02118, we are committed to ensuring that Boston’s streets, sidewalks, and bridges remain safe, clean, and attractive for all residents and visitors.
Our department is at the heart of Boston's infrastructure, overseeing the construction, maintenance, and cleaning of approximately 802 miles of roadways. We proudly operate two major drawbridges, maintain 68,055 City-owned street lights, and manage contracts for the removal and disposal of around 260,000 tons of solid waste annually. Additionally, we champion sustainability through Boston’s recycling program, diverting approximately 44,000 tons of waste each year.
In response to the challenges posed by sea level rise and storm surges, we are proactively working to protect the public right-of-way from flooding. Our dedicated Street Lighting Division ensures that all streetlights are well-maintained and operational, enhancing safety and visibility throughout the city.
Boston Public Works plays a pivotal role in the city’s development and permitting processes, owning and controlling Boston’s public spaces. We provide essential information on bridge design and construction projects and oversee the issuance of permits for opening or occupying public ways. Our Construction Inspection Unit (CIU) diligently monitors all active utility and private contractor construction work across Boston, providing daily reports to keep the public informed.
For businesses, we offer guidance on the mandatory Rules and Specifications requirement for obtaining a Public Works Department permit. Commercial waste companies are reminded that a permit is necessary for operations. Additionally, our team is here to assist with any construction projects that may impact sidewalks or require street access restrictions.
Join us in our mission to keep Boston beautiful and functional. For more information, please visit our website or contact us directly. Together, we can ensure a thriving and sustainable future for our beloved city.

"Work signs out asking for cars to be moved by 7:00 am. Overcast, drizzle and no work crews have started. No notification as to whether the work will be happening. Already paid for garage parking. Very poor public notification"
"Can you please try to pickup the “No Parking On These Dates” signs. It is starting to become common for people in beacon hill to leave these up weeks/months after they have expired to reserve parking outside of their place. The signs that say no parking have the dates printed so small it’s impossible to know what ones are active and what ones are expired. That being said, the people that work at public works places are always the best - thank you."

But us Working residents that are unemployed. And doing chores around the house playing catch up cause we're not working 60 to 70 hrs aweek to pay bills. We are the residents that dont have time to do social media cause we are working or sleeping.
