About the Business

Welcome to Phipps Street Burying Ground
Located on Phipps Street in Boston, Massachusetts, the Phipps Street Burying Ground is a historic cemetery and one of Boston's seven 17th-century burying grounds. Established shortly after the settlement of Charlestown, this sacred site was designated by the town's founding fathers as the primary burying place for the community. Originally surrounded by marshy flats and an estuary of the Charles River, the landscape of the area has been dramatically altered over the years due to land filling and urban-renewal activities.
The Phipps Street Burying Ground holds significant historical value, with some of its earliest burials being soldiers who fought in King Philip's War. This hallowed ground is the final resting place for not only the general citizenry but also many notable contributors to the growth of our nation.
Distinct from other historic cemeteries, the Phipps Street Burying Ground has retained its original configuration, with gravestones remaining in their authentic arrangement. Unlike the 19th-century "re-arranging campaigns" that altered many of Boston's burial grounds to align with contemporary aesthetic ideals, Phipps Street stands as a rare example of historical preservation. Additionally, it is unique for its small rectangular plots where Charlestown families were laid to rest, offering a glimpse into the burial customs of the time.
We invite you to visit and explore this remarkable piece of Boston's history, where each gravestone tells a story of the past and the people who helped shape our nation.
Reviews
"I live right near the Phipps Street burial grounds. When the City of Boston is mowing the grass there, the gates are open, and I go into the cemetery and stop at some of the graves and say their names out loud. I figure it's been over 300+ years since their name has been said. I understand it's a Native American tradition to say the name to keep their memory alive. BUT at night, I get a little scared walking by, so I walk on the other side of the street and yell "Good night" to all of them."
"An absolute treasure trove of 17th century gravestones, an amazing amount of work by The Old Stone Cutter, Joseph Larson, and other Boston carvers"
"The Phipps Street Burying Ground is always locked. When I wanted to visit I called ahead and after arranging a visit with the manager the gate was unlocked for as long as I wanted to visit. It is such a lovely cemetery."
"I was very disappointed to travel all the way from Rhode Island up to see this cemetery only to find it had a locked gate. I did finally find a way in and it was well worth the effort. I think that the Phipps Street Burying Ground is one of the most unique burial grounds in New England. The layout is based on the layout of Charlestown and the carvings on the stones are some of the most beautiful in New England. There are many original styles of grave stones filled with symbolism and the stones are mostly very well preserved. It is best to call in advance to be let in but don't miss this cemetery if you like to see old extremely well carved grave stones."
"Amazing and Beautiful cemetery filled with history. Unique graves carved by "the Boston Carver" & the famous Joseph Lamson and sons (who are buried here). You must call at least 24 hours prior to have the gate opened."
