Welcome to Mount Hope Cemetery, a historic and serene final resting place located at 355 Walk Hill Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1852 as a private cemetery and acquired by the City of Boston in 1857, Mount Hope Cemetery proudly stands as the city's first large municipal cemetery. Spanning 125 acres, this beautifully landscaped site embraces the principles of the Rural Cemetery Movement, offering a tranquil haven adorned with diverse tree species and captivating seasonal floral displays.
Originally developed as a peaceful retreat for both remembrance and passive outdoor recreation, Mount Hope Cemetery predates Boston's park system and continues to serve as a cherished green space for the local community. Despite early challenges, including accessibility issues and financial constraints, the cemetery has grown and thrived over the years, expanding its grounds and welcoming an increasing number of burials.
Visitors to Mount Hope Cemetery will discover special monuments dedicated to honoring veterans from the Grand Army of the Republic to the present, as well as tributes to the Elks, Boston Police, and the Odd Fellows. The cemetery also holds a poignant expanse of land reserved for the unmarked graves of the city's indigent, reflecting its commitment to serving all members of the community.
Whether you are visiting to pay respects, enjoy a peaceful walk, or explore the rich history embedded within its grounds, Mount Hope Cemetery offers a place of reflection and beauty. We invite you to experience the serene landscapes and historical significance of this cherished Boston landmark.

"I think the grounds could be better kept. I recently went to a funeral and the burial site in the Mattapan area. I couldn't help but compare. Where is the thick. green grass nicely mowed???"
"Have been visiting this cemetery for over 40 years and have always been impressed with how well the property was maintained, until today. The grass had not been cut for at least two weeks, there was trash blowing all over the place and weeds were everywhere. It looked awful. Definitely an embarrassment for the city of Boston."
"Today my family and I went to the Ukrainian section of Mt. Hope Cemetery as we do several times a year. We were quite disappointed at how shabby the area looked. There were lots of weeds, unmowed grass, a few pieces of paper and some empty bottles. On the other hand, since it was Memorial Day, the small flags were placed in those areas reserved for the military. The grass was cut, and everything else was as neat as a pin. Perhaps the landscapers who took such great care of THESE graves and areas, with heavy viewing on a day such as today, should pay closer attention to their work in those sections where foot travel isn't so extensive. Perhaps the next time I pay a visit, the area will look much more cared for."
"Super disappointed!!!!. Went to my great grandmothers grave and planted some plants and bulbs 2 weeks ago. Went back today to water them only to find that my plants were ripped out of the ground and missing and all of my bulbs had been weed wacked or mowed to nubs about an inch tall. Too lazy to go around them? Heart breaking!! No respect!!!!!. Hope someone treats they're deceased loved ones with more respect than mine were treated."
"My siblings and I made a trip from Florida not knowing where exactly our dad was buried. Prior to heading up here I had made contact with the office and at that time a lady was helpful and providing me with the information needed. So on July 5th we made our journey to Boston and at this time Paul Harris (cemetery foreman) was extremely helpful and took us right to the grave"
