About the Mason Square
Welcome to Mason Square, a tranquil oasis nestled in the heart of Brookline, Massachusetts. Located at 02446, this historic park is a cherished local treasure, renowned for its serene ambiance and natural beauty. Mason Square is unique for its meticulously arranged rows of mature trees, set on a flat plane, with majestic Red Oaks providing a stunning canopy overhead.
As one of the four park parcels envisioned by David Sears (1787-1871), Mason Square carries a rich legacy. Named in honor of Sears' wife's family, the park was acquired by the Town from Francis Shaw, a descendant of David Sears, in 1902. It was stipulated that the land "shall be laid out...as public parks...and shall never be used for the purpose of a playground, as distinguished from a public park," ensuring its preservation as a peaceful retreat for generations to come.
Mason Square holds the distinguished status of being listed on both the State and National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Cottage Farm Local Historic District. This quiet haven invites visitors to step back in time and enjoy the simple pleasures of nature, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls and quiet reflection. Reviews of Mason Square
"No benches, no trash cans, no dogs, no ball playing, no barbecuing: in other words, it’s not a park, it’s publicly funded additional frontage for the 8-10 surrounding houses. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising given that Brookline excels at exclusionary zoning policy, but it doesn’t sting any less seeing the wealthy use local government to subsidize themselves at the expense of the already-tenuous social fabric of America. Would give 0 stars if I could. :("
"It's just a little park. Watch out for wild turkeys"
