"The Old Village Cemetery in Dedham is one of the best preserved 17th centery cemeteries in Massachusetts. It is the oldest cemetery (1636) and was the only cemetery in Dedham for over a 100 years. I was surprised at the number of stones carved for young children. There are a wide variety of carvers and I noticed that they followed the Boston tradition of carving winged skulls late into the mid to late 1700's when grave cutters from more rural areas had mostly moved to carving winged cherubin or winged faces. The small stones for John and Sarah Woodcock say they were in their late 60's in 1718 when they died 4 months apart and now they rest under similar heavily cut and very scarry winged skull soul effigy stones This cemetery is a treasure and if you are in the area be sure to spend a couple of hours discovering the artistry of these wonderful 17th centery stone cutters. The Dedham Preservation Society has made many good improvements to the cemetery lately."
