About the Business
Welcome to Titus Mansion Ruins, a captivating destination nestled in the heart of the Tyringham Valley at 264 Main Road, Tyringham, Massachusetts. This enchanting locale invites you to explore the harmonious blend of history, art, and nature that defines Ashintully Gardens. Originally established in the early 20th century by Robb and Grace de Peyster Tytus, the estate once featured the magnificent Marble Palace, a Georgian-style mansion renowned for its reflective stucco exterior.
Today, visitors can wander through the evocative ruins of the Marble Palace, where the enduring Doric columns stand as solemn sentinels of its storied past. The gardens, sculpted over three decades by contemporary classical composer John McLennan, offer a serene escape with their intricate mix of formal and informal designs. McLennan's dedication to creating this verdant masterpiece was recognized with the prestigious Hunnewell Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 1997.
Embark on a half-mile woodland trail that leads you through the lush landscape, revealing scenic views north over the valley. Traverse footbridges and grassy terraces that seamlessly connect various parts of the garden, each offering moments of tranquility amidst the natural beauty of streams, native trees, and meadows. Delight in the artfully placed urns, columns, and statuary that enhance this picturesque setting.
For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, the property is part of The Trustees Hiking Challenge, inviting exploration of over 100 unique sites and numerous trails across Massachusetts. The estate is also pet-friendly, with guidelines for walking your dog, ensuring that every member of the family can enjoy the experience.
Accessible from the Mass Turnpike (Exit 10), the site offers convenient parking options, with clear signage guiding you to available spaces. A property map is posted at the parking area, and we recommend capturing a photo or downloading a trail map to enhance your visit.
Discover the timeless allure of Titus Mansion Ruins, where history, horticulture, and the natural world converge to create an unforgettable experience.

"Unexpectedly cool spot to visit, even if it took me a while to find it. Beautiful non-flowered gardens. The fact that I was the only one there was special too."
"Very nice and simple hike to an unexpected location. Make sure that you go see the gardens as well."
"I visited the Titus Mansion Ruins for the first time today. I cannot tell you how stunningly beautiful it was. Not only do the ruins feel like ancient Roman columns but you also get a beautiful view of the Berkshires. After visiting here, this is definitely a top five picturesque location in Massachusetts."
"If you want Victorian era mansion ruins with a mountain view, then this is it! Not only are the above ground ruins visually interesting, but the few remaining rooms underneath also make for a unique exploration. It feels as if you're walking through the ruins of a 17th century Italian villa. Don't forget about the Egyptian curse! I had a run-in with the creature, but it eventually let me pass peacefully."
"Here’s the thing: there are two routes you can get up there. One is by the little creek and it’s a short path and you will see some garden and ruins along the way. The other one is through the meadow and from the backroad and it is about 3x as long. You will see mostly nothing except a small marsh by the road and a fallen tree but it’s quieter. Oh yeah, there are 4 pillars btw and I didn’t find a way to climb them."
