About the Ashley House
Welcome to Ashley House, a captivating museum and tourist attraction located at 117 Cooper Hill Road, Sheffield, Massachusetts. Nestled in the picturesque Berkshires, this historic site offers a profound journey through time, exploring the narratives of two influential figures who fought for freedom and liberty, forever altering the course of our region’s history.
The Colonel John Ashley House, a cornerstone of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail, stands as one of the earliest European-style dwellings in the Berkshires. Built in 1735, this remarkable Colonial-era house was once the epicenter of white political and social life in colonial Sheffield. Colonel John Ashley, a prominent and wealthy figure, owned vast lands and businesses, prospering significantly from the institution of slavery.
However, it is the story of Elizabeth Freeman, also known as Mum Bett, that truly defines the Ashley House. Enslaved by the Ashleys, Elizabeth challenged the very foundations of slavery by suing for her freedom in 1781 and winning. Her courageous act not only secured her own liberty but also set a judicial precedent that led to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the life and legacy of Elizabeth Freeman at the Elizabeth Freeman Interpretive Center, open daily from sunrise to sunset. The outdoor exhibit, available seasonally, provides further insight into her extraordinary journey and enduring impact.
Explore the historic house with guided tours, offered regularly with pre-registration. Wander the scenic trails across Ashley Field to the adjoining Bartholomew’s Cobble, a National Natural Landmark, and enjoy breathtaking vistas and vibrant natural landscapes.
Plan your visit today and experience a weekend in the Berkshires filled with history, stunning scenery, and enriching activities.
