About the Business
Welcome to the Gardena Mayme Dear Library, a cherished community hub located at 1731 West Gardena Boulevard, Gardena, California. As a proud branch of the Los Angeles County Library system, we offer a rich history and a wide range of services to meet the diverse needs of our patrons.
Our library's story began under the guidance of the Wednesday Progressive Club before becoming part of the Los Angeles County Free Library in 1914. After a brief jurisdictional change, we returned to the County System in 1951. The current building, dedicated on December 5, 1964, was renamed in 1992 in honor of Mrs. Mayme Dear, a devoted volunteer whose legacy continues to inspire.
Visitors will delight in our enclosed Japanese Garden, a serene space designed by Takuma P. Tono, featuring a historic stone lantern gifted by Gardena’s sister city, Ichikawa. A stunning mosaic mural above the main entrance celebrates the evolution of books and printing.
The Gardena Mayme Dear Library is supported by the Gardena Valley Friends of the Mayme Dear Memorial Library, a dedicated volunteer organization that enhances our programs and events. Our library underwent a significant refurbishment in 2008, reopening in 2009 with modern interiors and a vibrant Teen Space, dedicated in 2011.
We invite you to explore our extensive collection of books, eBooks, and multimedia resources. Our library cardholders can download and stream eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, and movies, all free of charge. We also offer technological conveniences like Kindle Paperwhites and laptops for in-library use, ensuring access to digital content and tools.
Families will find valuable resources at our Family Place Library, offering early childhood information, parent education, and socialization opportunities. Students can benefit from our Homework Centers and online homework help, designed to support academic success.

"There was plenty of seating, but the internet from my laptop was slow and spotty. It was way too noisy as well. I also don’t like the fact that you have to be buzzed into the bathroom by staff. That’s a bit intrusive. I think there may have been a police precinct next door because there were police cruisers constantly coming in and out of the gate near the library."
"This library is what a library should be, it’s clean, it’s well maintained and the staff is extremely helpful. There are kids there generally and it’s not silent so if you’re looking for a vast space with very little noise go elsewhere."
"This is one of the worst libraries I have ever been, if you are looking for a quiet place to study AVOID this place. In the area's designated for study, there were people sitting the cubicles eating or just shooting the breeze, not even reading a book. And in the general desk areas there were several people talking obnoxiously loud without any of the librarians intervening to quiet them down. Definitely not returning to this library."
"Service is friendly and sweet.. Love my view"
"The Gardena Library has its ups and downs, but I really value what the library offers the community. I would appreciate if the staff kept the check-out system at a low volume. The volume has range and is annoying. I do love seeing students working with friends and college students receiving tutoring. What would benefit the library are some study group rooms so people being tutored could speak and not maintain a whisper. Is it just me or does a whisper agitate your ear drum more than just speaking at a normal volume? Other than that, this is a fine institution and I appreciate the librarians and this place. :)"
