Gumbiner Park
About the Business
Welcome to Gumbiner Park, a vibrant community hub nestled at 628-662 Martin Luther King Junior Avenue in Long Beach, California. Open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., this urban oasis serves as a vital green space for approximately 32,000 residents living within a half-mile radius. Designed with sustainability in mind, the park features recycled pavement, a bioswale for stormwater management, and lush, canopied trees, offering a refreshing escape in a densely developed area.
Gumbiner Park boasts a variety of amenities, including a playground for children, a skate park for thrill-seekers, a performance area for local artists, a picnic area for families, and stunning public art installations. Recent improvements to the surrounding area include enhanced street infrastructure, additional landscaping, a modernized drainage system, new bus stops, and sidewalks that adhere to current accessibility standards.
The park's creation was funded by a $2.83 million grant from the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program (Prop 84). Previously a high-traffic intersection prone to accidents, the land has been transformed into a safe and accessible green space, enhancing connectivity to the nearby Museum of Latin American Art and the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum.
On June 9, 2015, the Long Beach City Council named the park in honor of Dr. Robert Gumbiner, a visionary healthcare pioneer and philanthropist. Dr. Gumbiner founded the Museum of Latin American Art in 1996 and played a significant role in the cultural development of Long Beach. His legacy continues with the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum, which opened in 2010, further enriching the city's artistic landscape.
Managed by Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine, Gumbiner Park invites you to explore its dynamic offerings and enjoy a moment of tranquility in the heart of the city.

"Update from 3 years ago. It is still a homeless encampment. At present 6/29/24 there are 16 tents and probably 30 individuals. Plenty of garbage as well. I have no idea where all these people that live there go to the toilet as it appears there is none on the site. Do not send you children here to play. Today there was a shooting on 6th next to the park. Not a safe place for anyone except our politicians. Sorry no pictures. It would be dangerous to try to take one."
"A lot of homeless people hang out arourd this park since its been built which kind of sucks. be careful"
"I live 50 yards from this park and would give zero stars if I could. Downright dangerous to the point where you can't walk through the park much less do anything else. There was a murder there in 2020 a few months after I warned the city to close the park until homeless tent encampments and criminal activity was dealt with. 10 yrs ago we had community meetings about what this park should be, and amongst ideas suggested: community garden, dog park which would have worked, but regrettably, neither idea was voted in. It has gotten worse, with more encampmentsand spilling into surrounding areas."
"This NEW park is going to need a lot of social and public works assistance. It now houses homeless during this pandemic, ALL homeless need social services and solutions. Tenting in a public park is not it. Please resolve to keep it a park for families, children and all. NO bathroom on site so you can imagine. This is NOT transitional housing."
"Meh... Not at the top of my list, but not the worst I've been to. The park itself is small, but nice. It's fairly new, so the equipment is still fresh and new-looking. There is a small skate park attached, which is nice. There's always a few people practing tricks around. One major downfall though, is that there is no restroom facilities at the park, or water fountains, and no where close by with public restrooms that I'm aware of. There is also ALWAYS a large (minimum I've seen is 5...up to 20+!) Homeless presence. Not just homeless, but loud, usually arguing, sometimes physically fighting, drinking, and using any drug they can get their hands on, in plain sight, with no regard! Police drive by and DO NOTHING! My son loves to play on the jungle gym here, it's a little different than the usual, so he enjoys that...but unfortunately I try to avoid taking him here because of all the riff-raff. I've seen some wildly offensive things here! I wish that Long Beach would take care of the parks they worked so hard to have built...this one is just a few years old, if that, and it's already ruined in my eyes. What a waste of good potential :("
