"Bishop William Lugene Smith was born in Montgomery in 1906. He came to Los Angeles working as a railroad porter. He was a pastor for 54 years at Bethlehem Temple Church. During his long career he composed songs and poems -- and wrote a book. He died in 1998 and this public square is a memorial to him. I learned that by reading city records because there's nothing here that actually says anything about the bishop... just an intersections scarred with the skids from anti-social drivers doing donuts. Maybe a traffic island, a bench, a stanchion, a fountain, some landscaping, would help. Heaven forbid an intersection be closed, completely to cars so that it can be an actual public square and not just a beige sign proclaiming it one."
