Nestled just three miles south of San Clemente, our park is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. As one of California's top five most-visited state parks, San Onofre State Beach attracts nearly 2.5 million visitors annually, thanks to its diverse recreational offerings and breathtaking coastal scenery.
San Onofre State Beach is renowned for its three distinct areas: San Onofre Bluffs, San Mateo Campground, and San Onofre Surf Beach. Each area offers unique experiences, from world-class surfing and serene nature trails to breathtaking views of sandstone bluffs and diverse wildlife, including occasional sightings of whales, dolphins, and sea lions offshore.
San Onofre Bluffs: Situated at 5200 S. Pacific Coast Hwy, San Clemente, CA, this area provides camping and day-use parking along Old Highway 101. With six rugged dirt access trails leading to the beach below, it's a favorite spot for swimmers and surfers. Enjoy camping with amenities such as fire pits, picnic tables, cold outdoor showers, and chemical toilets. Please note there are no RV hookups, but an RV dump-station is available.
San Mateo Campground: Located at 830 Cristianitos, San Clemente, CA, this campground is a short distance inland, offering a peaceful retreat with convenient access to the famous Trestles Beach via a 1.5-mile Nature Trail. This area provides a rich habitat for rare and endangered species. Campsites feature fire pits and picnic tables, with RV hookups, hot indoor showers, and flush toilets available. Open year-round, it's a perfect spot for camping enthusiasts.
San Onofre Surf Beach: Known for its historical surf break, this day-use area offers a variety of surf spots suitable for all skill levels, from gentle waves to the premier surf break at Trestles. While camping is not available here, visitors can enjoy cold showers, chemical toilets, and a limited number of fire pits. Please note that alcohol is not permitted, and vehicles over 25 feet are restricted.
For surf enthusiasts, Trestles is a must-visit destination, accessible only by foot via a scenic nature trail. Other notable surf spots include Church, known for sunbathing and bird watching, and Trails, the southernmost surf spot offering a mix of rock and sandy breaks.
