Reviews
"Mixed bag right now. The area is incredible, especially shrouded in fog. However many of the trails are now overgrown. There is a lot of trail maintenance that needs to happen,"
"Excellent trail. Plenty of parking and good restrooms at the trailhead here. I would consider this a good replacement for Muir Woods if you can't get a reservation and are short on time. The main trails here are nice and wide - great for families with small kids. Other trails here range from mid to intermediate in terms of difficultly. Some trails can be really overgrown depending on the time of the year; during my hike park rangers had a couple of bush hogs and were clearing a trail that I would normally avoid unless it was cleared - staying on main trails would prevent this issue for anyone else visiting. I was very fortunate and ran across ~10 banana slugs on my hike - be on the lookout - they 'hide' in plain sight on the trail! I stayed mainly up in the woods and did not get down to the coast. For people in the nearby area, I would consider this a no brainer for a visit at least once a year for a long hike."
"A great starting point for the Bear Valley trail. I navigated off and went on towards the Ocean via the Meadow trail, sky trail, and Woodward valley trails. There are many options to create 6 to 24 mile loops. I hiked a 14 mile loop which had over 2700 feet in elevation gain and took almost 5 hours. There are plenty of beautiful views of the Ocean and Point Reyes. Along the way expect to find historic fire recovery and a mix of old and new growth. There are plenty of wonderful wild flowers along the way as well. Expect the trail to be easy at times with access for biking mixed in with moderate climbs and descent. Set aside plenty of time to enjoy the scenery of the Philip Burton Wilderness and the Ocean expanse. There are a couple of campgrounds along the way which require a reservation. The parking lot is huge and there was no fee. I would expect unless it is a Summer holiday weekend one should be able to find a spot."
"Gorgeous trails to hike! Some side trails do not permit mountain bikes which is very nice if you want to have a relaxing hike without a bike whizzing by. Went up bear valley trail to old pine then to sky trail and back down mount wittenberg for a total of 7.5 miles. Flowers were already starting to bud since it's so warm. If you get in early it's nice and cool and all you can hear are the birds chirping away, very peaceful."
