Discover the Historic Gualala Cemetery
Nestled within the serene Mill Bend Preserve in Gualala, California, the Gualala Cemetery is a historic landmark that dates back to the late 1870s. Founded by lumber mill owner Zemri Heywood, this cemetery serves as the final resting place for the pioneering men, women, and children who settled the Mendonoma Coast and the town of Gualala.
Thanks to the generous donations and tireless efforts of dedicated volunteers, the Gualala Cemetery has undergone significant restoration. The site has been cleared, perimeter fencing rebuilt, and ongoing efforts are being made to repair grave monuments and restore original family plot borders. These efforts ensure that the cemetery's future preservation is secured by a non-profit land trust, though there is still much work to be done.
Visitors are invited to explore the rich histories of Gualala's pioneer families through interactive experiences at the cemetery. A kiosk plot map displays known grave locations, with red dots indicating QR Codes. By scanning these codes, you can delve into the fascinating stories of the individuals and families interred here. Benches are available for those wishing to take a moment to reflect and connect with the past.
Please note that, at this time, the cemetery does not provide doggie bag dispensers, bathrooms, or garbage cans. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in maintaining the site's cleanliness and respect.
