Reviews of Starkey Wilderness Bike Trail
"One star for the sheer beauty to note here - it is beautiful. I would give 5 stars, had it not been for the horrible bikers there. Bikers that use the "bike route" at Starkey Park are yelling at pedestrians on the roads AND the "bike route," as if they own the entire park. People are just walking their dogs, runners are training or just exercising for health - they are getting yelled at for "being in the way"! My son was training for karate belts, and this was where the run takes place. WE STOPPED COMING TWO YEARS AGO BECAUSE OF THESE PEOPLE. Now he's training for another belt, and this is STILL going on. Enough is enough! Another walker with her dogs told me a similar story when we were both walking up towards the gate from the road. She was/is having the same problem with these obnoxious bikers. SHE stopped coming for months to try it again, only to find out that it's still going on. My son and I were there for approximately 30 minutes this morning (Sat morning) and were yelled at three times by different groups of bikers! This needs to stop. Even though there are signs put up along the bike trail that walkers do have the RIGHT OF WAY, still they're getting yelled at by some bikers! It doesn't take much for them to NOT TELL WALKERS TO MOVE! We are perfectly willing to be helpful and share the park, but this is abuse from these people."
"Beautiful with lots of wildlife. The biking trails are well suited for my 6 year old and I can tow my toddler in his chariot while biking. Not very busy trails. There was a near miss incident with an electric bike that really scared me. She was going way too fast and weaving between people without even holding her handle bars. If she hit someone at that speed, they would have been killed."
"Not skate-able asphalt and trail map is very confusing. I’m visiting from Ohio and I enjoy exploring local trails on my roller skates. I was excited to see a 6-mile paved trail through Florida wilderness to the suncoast trail but the condition of the asphalt has been left to crumble and fall apart. Doesn’t look like it’s ever been seal coated. It’s just not a skate-able surface anymore, which is really sad. It is far easier/less costly to maintain a paved trail with annual seal coat than to completely cap it with 3” of new fresh asphalt (which is what this trail now needs). This trail is what happens when you don’t maintain the asphalt, for decades. I skated the other way onto Starkey Blvd and the trail along the busy road is well maintained (probably bc the residents in the area would complain if the asphalt looked as bad as it does in the park), but who wants to exercise while breathing in car exhaust?! Yuck! The Starkey Gap portion of this trail (south of SR54 connecting to Pinellas trail) is really nice smooth asphalt but not really through the wilderness, it meanders around several residential communities. If you’re looking for a paved, skate-able wilderness trail go to Coastal Anclote Trail. It isn’t very long, but the asphalt is well maintained and there is WAY more nature to be seen than skating down Starkey Blvd. I come back to this area every few years, maybe I’ll check back in a few years and see if they’ve re-paved the 6 mile trail… I still think it would be really cool to explore in this area but I’m just not going to rent a bicycle while I’m in town just to bike a very poorly maintained trail. Also note, my one-star review is not for the park, it is for this trail specifically. The park seems quite nice. If I had a horse or a mountain bike I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed this place a lot more."
"I've walked a trail, biked a trail, and today I went off the paved bike trail to try the mountain bike trails. I did small ones, #s 5-8. Fun! I'm so excited to go back and try others. Today I saw a wild turkey and lots of gopher turtles, of course. It was interesting to see all the diggings from the wild pigs."
"Clean & well kept. Many restrooms. Multiple parking areas. Bike path is wide, paved and long. Also, unpaved trails through the woods. Lots of wildlife. Turtle nesting season right now!"
