Reviews of Betty & Crawford Rainwater - Perdido River Preserve (The Nature Conservancy)
"Im giving it 5 stars to bring up the average because i appreciate any hiking trail near the city, although it has some issues. Late April 2024, As described it has a footpath which is very overgrown in sections and a grassy hardpacked road which is not at all overgrown. When i was there with no recent rain, there was one large puddle in the road and several muddy marshy areas in the footpath. You can access the water in at least one area. There were a lot of biting flies. However also a lot of wildlife and wildflowers. We rode our mountain bikes on part of the footpath and to the end of the road at the missing bridge. We saw two different types of snake, a turtle, two deer, many pitcher plants, and many other swaths of wildflowers."
"We drove way back here to hike but when we arrived it was very overgrown and unkept. Hardly a trail visible. Looks like no one ever uses it anymore and we saw why...there were no trespassing signs everywhere. No trespassing means no trespassing right?"
"There are basically two parts. A two track road that divides the preserve from the paper company land, and a fairly short walking trail that cuts south and skirts a bayou, and then meanders back toward the two-track. The walking trail is ok, lots of bird activity around the bayou. The two-track is more interesting, I took my bike and you can ride about two miles before it dead ends at a creek and the remains of a bridge. There’s also an old shelter of some kind. Numerous side trails branch off you can walk toward the river. Saw a spooky old deer blind on one. Also, there was decrepit boardwalk that crosses a pitcher plant prairie, couldn’t find it last time, it was near the road but unmarked. Much of the area gets soggy after it rains, plan accordingly."
"I had vaguely remembered it’s existence and one day decided that I need a nature walk and headed over because it’s only a few miles from my house. I drive up there and when I get there it disappoints. Way overgrown and no marked trails. There was something that might have been a trail but it was greatly overgrown. Now I would love to even help clear it but there was no info on the board there. I feel like it could be great and revived to greatness but needs work."
"Nice example of pine forest riparian habitat. Limited access to Perdido River. Plenty of parking. No restrooms. The hiking is easy going."
