About the Business
Welcome to Horton Point Lighthouse Nautical Museum
Nestled at 3575 Lighthouse Road in the picturesque town of Southold, New York, the Horton Point Lighthouse Nautical Museum stands as a beacon of maritime history and a cherished local landmark. Constructed in 1857 by the U.S. Lighthouse Service, this historic lighthouse is one of eight in Southold Township and holds the esteemed status of being listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Perched on the "Cliff Lot" from Barnabas Horton's original 1640 land grant, the lighthouse tower rises 58 feet and once housed a magnificent 3rd order Fresnel lens. It has been a guiding light for many, transitioning through various keepers until its automation in 1933. A significant restoration in 1990 saw the lighthouse tower rejuvenated and relit, while the lower level of the Keeper's House was transformed into the Southold Historical Museum's Nautical Museum.
Visitors are invited to explore the rich maritime artifacts and exhibits that the museum offers. Admission is $5.00 per person or $10.00 per family, which includes access to the Nautical Museum and the Maple Lane Complex at 55200 Main Rd., Southold. Parking is conveniently available in the Southold Park District’s lot for a $5 fee (unless you are a Park District resident). Please note that street parking requires a Southold Town Permit.
Enhance your visit by listening to a special podcast about Horton Point Lighthouse and its renowned "Lady Lighthouse Keeper," courtesy of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. Additionally, take a quick video tour of the Nautical Museum to preview the fascinating exhibits that await.
The Southold Historical Museum's programs are proudly supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, with backing from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

"Beautiful and tranquil! Great for relaxing and tuning in to nature."
"Beautiful spot. We got there later and the parking lot was still open. Thank you. Saw beautiful sunset. Walked down long steps yo s gorgeous pebbly beach. Great wave action. Beautified stones and a lot of large broken seashells."
"A beautiful lighthouse with great view and a modest museum. The museum has been closed since the COVID. But the stunning view of the Long Island Sound still makes it a worthy stop. There is a walkway to the beach which would be a treat when the weather is good. A lovely and relaxing spot."
"The place looks beautiful but it was not open as indicated on the website, couldn't even get in the parking lot and the town was giving tickets to everyone parked on the street if you didn't have a town sticker. They could have at least leave the gates open so people could park on the premises but I guess the town feels they will make more money by giving tickets, so sad. Those stairs though, they are a killing."
"Beautiful park. Perfectly maintained. Should be five stats, but open to Town residents only. You can't legally park without a town permit and the main parking lot is closed when the lighthouse is closed. We kept someone with the car at all times. In the hour that we were there we saw about five cars drive up, look at the sign, and turn right back around. Too bad."
