A Trail with a Purpose
The Setauket Greenway Trail is more than just a path; it is a 3.3-mile corridor of protected open space designed for recreation and conservation. Ideal for walking, hiking, biking, and non-motorized transportation, the trail provides a safe and natural environment for a variety of outdoor activities. It serves as an alternative route for commuting to school, work, parks, and other neighborhoods, enhancing connectivity while preserving the local ecosystem.
A Community Effort
The trail's creation was a collaborative effort that began in the 1960s when the New York State Department of Transportation acquired the land. Local residents formed a task force to plan a community-friendly greenway, with significant funding secured by NYS Assemblyman Steve Englebright and U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop. The first phase of construction was completed in 2008, marking the beginning of a new era for the community.

Reviews of Setauket Greenway Trail
"Nice paved trail through wooded areas. Several street crossings but there are automatic triggers at the busiest ones to stop traffic. I got in five miles round trip. Not very crowded Friday afternoon."
"Very nice trail for those strongly interested in hiking/jogging/biking. I would rate it an intermediate trail and don't recommend young kids biking on it (walking would be fine.) Lots of hills and dips and bobs, a few road crossings, curves and some sharp steep turns. If you have decent stamina and can keep up with the trail, it's very fun to experience."
"Wonderful trail just infront of my apartment. The smell of the forest is amazing and the birds sings in the evening makes the walk heavenly. Nice paved road throughout."
"Nice little paved path for walking, biking, or running. Well maintained and a little scenic."
"It's a fun family path. Some of the climbs will be challenging but worth it on the Descent. If it rains be cautious of wet leaves and Moss at the bottom of the Descent. It would be nice if people who bring their dogs didn't leave their waist in the middle of the path. I saw three occasions of that in one day. At about the 2-mile mark there's a mountain bike trail off to the side with challenging drops and climbs."
