The Tyler House or the Amos and Juliana Smith House
About the Business
Welcome to The Tyler House (Amos and Juliana Smith House)
Nestled in the heart of Setauket-East Setauket, New York, The Tyler House, also known as the Amos and Juliana Smith House, stands as a testament to American history and architectural heritage. Located at 97 Main Street, this iconic structure is one of the finest examples of a historic American farmhouse in the area.
A Journey Through Time
Originally constructed in the mid-1700s, the house was built using locally sourced materials: white oak for its sturdy framing, white pine for the floorboards, and cedar for the roof shingles. The original design featured two rooms on the first floor, centered around a chimney, and three bedrooms on the second floor. In 1878, a thoughtful addition expanded the home to include a dining room and two more bedrooms, reflecting the evolving needs of its inhabitants.
A Home for Generations
The Tyler House has been home to several generations, beginning with Amos Smith and Juliana Hawkins who raised their family here in the late 18th century. The legacy continued with their descendants, the Swift family, and eventually the Tyler family, who resided here from the mid-19th century. The house has lovingly sheltered numerous families, each adding their own chapter to its rich history.
Preserving History for the Future
In 2016, the stewardship of The Tyler House was entrusted to the Three Village Community Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and architectural heritage of the area. The Trust ensures that this historic gem remains a cherished part of the community for future generations to appreciate.
