As your local government representative, Council Member Menchaca is committed to serving the vibrant communities of Red Hook, and parts of Gowanus, Park Slope, Sunset Park, Borough Park, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, and Bath Beach.

Currently, Council Member Alexa Avilés is serving her second term representing the 38th District, which encompasses these diverse neighborhoods. A dedicated public servant, Avilés is a proud Boricua mom, Brooklynite, and democratic socialist who works tirelessly to ensure that all residents have the resources they need to thrive.

Council Member Avilés chairs the Committee on Immigration and contributes her expertise as a member of several vital committees, including Economic Development, Public Housing, Housing and Buildings, General Welfare, Environmental Protections, and Resiliency and Waterfronts. She is also actively involved in the Council’s Taskforce to Combat Hate.

Throughout her tenure, Avilés has championed legislation focused on equity for South Brooklyn’s working-class communities. Her efforts have led to the passage of significant bills addressing cruise ship pollution, truck congestion in Red Hook, and transparency in NYCHA management and NYPD civilian interactions. Additionally, she has secured millions in funding for essential park and school upgrades while advocating against detrimental budget cuts to vital services.
