About the Business
Welcome to the Jersey City Police Department Unit of Firearms / Gun Permits, where our primary goal is to ensure the safety and security of our community. Located at 2 Jackson Square, Jersey City, New Jersey 07305, our unit operates under the direction of Director James Shea as part of the Department of Public Safety. This department encompasses the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (O.E.M.), Parking Enforcement, and Fire Prevention.
Public safety is a top priority for the Fulop Administration and Director Shea, and since 2013, we have successfully hired over 430 police officers, increasing our force to nearly 975 officers. This expansion has significantly enhanced our ability to maintain a strong police presence, particularly in areas most affected by crime.
As one of New Jersey's largest cities, Jersey City places a high emphasis on public safety, and we recognize that community involvement is a crucial element in this effort. We encourage residents to actively participate by providing anonymous tips and volunteering for emergency response initiatives, helping us make Jersey City a safer place to live, work, and play.
Mayor Fulop has also established the Citizens Advisory Review Board to foster community engagement. This board meets on the first Tuesday of every month to assess police data and public safety issues, offering recommendations for improvements in programs, legislation, and training.

"Absolutely horrible! I called after I read the reviews expecting the nice person everyone was talking about. However, the lady that picked up the phone was extremely rude and not helpful at all. I've been asking about something that the state states on its websites to ask about if you are not sure and she started yelling me "Just apply on the website", she didn't even give me a chance to explain the situation. It is very sad to see people like her working with JCPD, she brings shame to the police! In fact, in regard to sensitive topics like these they should make sure the agents give thorough explanations not yelling at people! I am really disappointed!"

"I just read that Denise was very helpful and took the time needed. I called about what i have to do to bring my firearms with me as i move to NJ from PA. She told me " you should already know that". Was extremely rude, not helpful, defiant, and did not seem to care that i was calling to be in the legal right of having my firearms transferred with me. Extremely terrible."
